Chinese Painting

Traditional Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

Traditional (also known as Native) Chinese painting is an ancient artistic tradition dating back thousands of years. It is always done with a brush and ink (which can be black or coloured using natural minerals only) and most commonly painted onto paper or silk. Chinese painting is especially effective at creating landscapes which appear can appear fanciful yet realistic at the same time.

In order to create Traditional Chinese paintings it is necessary to have a strong grasp of sketch techniques. As the style of painting does not allow recovery if even a single brush stroke goes awry this is a very challenging artistic skill!

Chinese calligraphy is the term used for the hand drawn creation of Chinese writing. It is done with a brush and ink and the effects are strikingly beautiful. Throughout the eastern world calligraphy is still considered to be a great art and sign of culture and an advanced spirit.
