Oil Painting

Oil Painting

Oil painting involves using a brush and canvas or wood surface, just like painting with water colours. Only instead of using water-soluble pigments oil paintings use pigments bound with oils like linseed oil (which is extracted from the flax plant). Oil painting originated (it is currently believed) in modern day Afghanistan and were perfected in northern Europe during the Renaissance.

Oil painting involves the use of paints mixed with mineral spirits or turpentine to change how quickly the paint dries and therefore its texture. It can be painted on canvas or wooden panels. Many classic works of art, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci and the Sunflower series by Vincent Van Gogh, are done in the medium of oil.

Leonardo Da Vinci wrote about painting: "If the painter wishes to see enchanting beauties, he has the power to produce them. If he wishes to see monstrosities, whether terrifying, or ludicrous and laughable, or pitiful, he has the power and the authority to create them.”
